Allergies occur when the immune system responds unusually to a foreign substance, known as an allergen.

These allergens can include pollen, pet dander, or certain foods. According to the World Allergy Organization, allergies are among the most prevalent chronic conditions, affecting as much as 50% of the population in some parts of the industrialized world.
